Bathrooms play an important role, as well as giving you time to yourself bathrooms can be therapeutic and reviving for jaded spirits. Bathrooms should be calming and relaxing. Bathrooms are the room in which these activities take place and bathrooms are one of the most intimate rooms in the home where decoration and design can enhance the pleasures enjoyed within bathrooms.
The act of bathing, rather than just washing, was popular amongst the ancient Egyptians, Greeks and Romans. The Romans built large communal baths, which included massage areas and steam rooms. However for much of history the pleasures of bathrooms were largely shunned in the west being associated with sensuality rather than cleanliness and health.
Although many richer households and grand hotels had bathrooms it was not until after the Second World War that lavatories were plumbed inside the house instead of being in the yard and new homes were built with designated space for bathrooms.  Until then most bathing had taken place in portable metal hip baths.
Early bathroom were functional places with lino on the floor and baths were taken once a week and hot water was used sparingly.
Bathrooms are as much part of the home as any other room and worries about water usage is now more environmental than economic.
Decoration in bathrooms needs to be carefully planned and bathroom furniture and fittings chosen thoughtfully and a good place to start is our Bathrooms Store. The new materials now available for use in bathrooms have led to more adventurous styles and colours being used.

Ideas for bathrooms have been gleaned from cultures where bathing has always been part of daily life and should not be rushed.
